How do I get TrustDialer ready to take calls?

Dialer

Choose TrustDialer as the phone app and finish the short setup checks so Android can show and handle calls.

Open TrustDialer and follow the setup steps. Choose it as the phone app when Android asks, then allow the call and contact access the phone needs.

Before Android requests call-history access, TrustDialer shows a Call history access disclosure explaining how it uses the log and that the history stays on the device. Choose Continue to proceed or Not now to defer.

TrustDialer shows what is still missing. Finish any permission or notification prompt before relying on it for incoming calls.

Why are calls not showing or ringing in TrustDialer?

Dialer

Check the phone-app choice, call permissions, notifications, and the battery settings that can delay an incoming-call screen.

First check that TrustDialer is still selected as the phone app and that call and notification access are allowed.

Some phones also need TrustDialer excluded from aggressive battery saving before incoming calls can reliably wake the screen. The in-app readiness screen points to the setting that needs attention.

Can I use TrustDialer and TrustDialerSms together?

Both

Yes. TrustDialer handles calling, while TrustDialerSms handles SMS and MMS conversations.

Yes. TrustDialer is the calling app and TrustDialerSms is the messaging app. They can hand a number, a draft, or an existing conversation to the right place when you move between calls and messages.

Each app asks only for the Android role and access it needs for its own job.

How do I avoid accidental taps during a call?

Dialer

Turn on the in-call control lock, then slide deliberately when you need to use call controls.

Turn on the in-call control lock in TrustDialer settings. Call controls start locked, so you need to slide deliberately before using mute, keypad, hold, audio, or hang up.

Unlock only when needed, then lock the controls again without interrupting the call.

How do I block a caller?

Dialer

Block a number from its call details or manage it in the blocked-number list with an optional name and note.

Open a recent or missed call, then choose the option to block that number. You can also use the blocked-number list to add, search, edit, or remove entries.

Add a local name or note if it helps the person using the phone understand why the number was blocked.

Calls

Can TrustDialer identify a suspicious caller?

Dialer

TrustDialer can open a number lookup from call history, but it does not maintain a shared cloud spam database.

From a recent or missed call, TrustDialer can open a lookup for that number so you can investigate it yourself.

It does not claim that a number is safe or unsafe from a shared cloud database. Use the result as a prompt to decide whether to block the caller or add them to a trusted contact list.

Calls

Can I see the caller country before I answer?

Dialer

For an international number, TrustDialer can show a country label as a practical clue before you answer or call back.

When Android provides an incoming number in an international format, TrustDialer can show the associated country name on the incoming-call screen. This can help you pause when an unexpected out-of-country number calls.

The label is based on the number, not verified caller identity. It cannot prove that a caller is safe or legitimate, so treat unexpected calls carefully.

Calls

How can I call the people I use most?

Dialer

Use search, favorites, speed dial, recent calls, and contact groups to reach familiar people with fewer steps.

Use the main search to find a saved contact, a recent call, or a number. Add frequent contacts to Favorites or speed dial for one-tap calling.

Contact groups can also make a long address book easier to browse for a family member or caregiver.

Calls

How do I choose which SIM makes a call?

Dialer

Set a usual call line or choose between the available phone accounts when you place the call.

Set a preferred call line in TrustDialer, or choose from the available lines when placing a call. The choices shown depend on the SIMs and calling accounts Android currently makes available.

If a line is missing, check that it is active in the phone’s own SIM and calling settings.

Messages

Why can’t I send or receive texts in TrustDialerSms?

Sms

For full SMS and MMS use, choose TrustDialerSms as the messaging app and complete its access checks.

Android reserves important text-message actions for the default SMS app. TrustDialerSms first shows a Messages and contacts disclosure; choose Continue if you want to see Android’s default-SMS prompt, or Not now to defer.

SMS permissions are requested only while TrustDialerSms is the default SMS app. If another app takes that role, TrustDialerSms stops reading the inbox, backup export, and message counts. Check mobile data too if picture messages do not arrive.

Messages

How do I receive picture messages in TrustDialerSms?

Sms

Incoming picture and carrier group MMS download automatically while TrustDialerSms is the default SMS app and mobile data is available.

TrustDialerSms starts downloading an incoming MMS automatically when it is the default SMS app. Android and the carrier must allow mobile-data MMS delivery. The app saves the available text, pictures, and participants in the conversation.

If a download fails, it retries up to six times over about nine hours, including after a reboot. If every attempt fails, a notification asks you to have the sender resend the picture message. Check mobile data and the default-SMS setting first.

Messages

How do I mark and share part of a message with my finger?

Sms

Drag left to right across message text to mark it yellow, right to left to erase, and tap a mark to copy or share only that text.

Drag a finger left to right across the exact words you want in an SMS or MMS to draw a yellow mark. Drag right to left across a mark to erase it. Tap a mark to copy that text and offer it for sharing. Marking alone does not copy or share anything.

Marks last only while the conversation remains open; the thread menu can clear them sooner. They do not change the saved message. Automatic URL, email, phone-number, and verification-code recognition was removed because it produced too many false matches.

Marking happens on the device. Nothing is shared until you choose a destination; the receiving app or service then applies its own privacy policy.

How do I block a text sender?

Sms

Block or unblock the sender from a conversation menu, or manage the list in the Blacklist screen.

Open the conversation menu and block the displayed sender, or use the Blacklist screen to add, find, edit, and remove entries.

You can save a local name and note with a blocked number. That note stays in TrustDialerSms and does not change the Android contact.

Messages

Can I send photos in a message?

Sms

Yes. Add a photo to make an MMS message, subject to the phone’s carrier and message settings.

Choose the photo attachment option from a new or existing conversation. TrustDialerSms prepares it as an MMS message and shows a preview before you send.

Whether it can be delivered still depends on the phone plan, carrier, and MMS settings on the device.

How do I keep an important conversation easy to find?

Sms

Pin a conversation to the top, archive a finished one, or mute a noisy thread without deleting it.

Pin a conversation to keep it at the top of the inbox. Archive a finished conversation to move it out of the everyday list, or mute it to stop its notifications.

Archiving and muting do not delete messages or stop new messages from arriving.

How do I delete messages automatically?

Sms

Use timed cleanup rules to remove all, read, or sent messages after the period you choose.

Open the message cleanup settings and choose whether a rule applies to all, read, or sent messages. Pick the time period carefully before saving.

Keep messages that matter by locking them or leaving them outside the selected cleanup rule.

What is Grandma Mode?

Dialer

Grandma Mode simplifies trusted calling and can add spoken assistance for people who need a calmer phone.

Grandma Mode gives trusted contacts and everyday calling a simpler, calmer presentation. It can use spoken assistance when the phone has suitable Android text-to-speech voices installed.

Set it up with the person who will use the phone, then test calls and the emergency path before relying on it.

What is Kid Mode?

Dialer

Kid Mode presents a protected launcher with only the apps and contacts chosen for that person.

Kid Mode uses a protected home screen with the apps, contacts, and visual choices a caregiver has selected. It is designed to reduce accidental changes and keep the phone focused.

Use one protected mode at a time so the phone’s behavior stays predictable for the person using it.

How do I leave a protected phone screen?

Dialer

Use the protected-mode recovery option and the caregiver password; every protected setup includes a deliberate way back out.

Use the recovery option shown in protected mode, then enter the caregiver password. Protected mode is designed to be hard to leave by accident, not impossible to leave.

Before handing over a phone, make sure the caregiver has tested the recovery route and saved the password somewhere safe.

Can a caregiver receive phone alerts?

Dialer

Caregivers can review filtered-call activity locally; caregiver alert automation is a Plus feature, and SMS alerts also need the full build and Android SMS access.

TrustDialer keeps local filtered-call review available on the phone. TrustDialer Plus unlocks caregiver alert automation.

Caregiver SMS alerts need both Plus and the full direct-download build, plus TrustDialer as the default SMS app, SMS permission, a caregiver number, and the right SIM route. Test an alert after setup so you know it reaches the right person without creating unnecessary noise.

Why can’t I turn on whitelist protection?

Dialer

Whitelist enforcement, schedules, unknown-caller rules, and quick whitelist actions are TrustDialer Plus advanced call protection.

Blacklist, spam lookup, recent calls, and local filtered-call review stay available in Free. Whitelist enforcement is different: it changes which incoming calls can ring, so it belongs to TrustDialer Plus advanced call protection.

When Plus is active and TrustDialer is the default phone app, whitelist mode, weekly schedules, unknown-caller policies, quiet-mode behavior, and quick Add to whitelist actions can be used. If Plus is not active, saved whitelist setup stays on the phone but is not enforced.

How do I transfer selected contacts, blacklist or whitelist to another phone?

Dialer

Open Settings > Phone to phone to send selected or all contacts, blocked numbers, whitelist entries, favorites and setup directly to nearby TrustDialer.

On the receiving phone, open Settings > Phone to phone > Receive from another phone. Allow Android to make it visible for five minutes and note the name and session QR code on the waiting screen. On the sender, choose Send to another phone, then Grandma starter, Kid starter, Everything or Custom.

Use search and All / None to select contacts, blocked numbers (blacklist) and whitelist entries. Toggle favorites, spam lookup sites and setup sections as needed. Presets select only data present on the sender; Everything means all supported transfer sections, not SMS or call history. If tiles, favorites or emergency contacts refer to unselected contacts, use Add them.

Find the receiver by its displayed name or scan its session QR code. The QR code holds a one-time key fingerprint and secret, not the selected phone data; a successful QR pairing skips the 6-digit check. Without QR, compare the 6-digit code on both screens and tap Codes match only if they are identical. If they differ, choose Codes are different; nothing is sent. The receiver reviews the counts and chooses Receive or Decline.

Receive opens a restore preview without applying data. Untick unwanted sections, choose the contact target for new contacts, optionally use Simulate, then tap Restore. Save to a file instead exports the current selection as a password-protected encrypted .sdb file; open it under Backup > Restore backup on the receiving phone to review the same selection preview. Keep its password safe and share it separately.

Does phone-to-phone transfer use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or NFC?

Dialer

Bluetooth is the baseline. Optional fast connections use Google Nearby Connections, which can choose Bluetooth or Wi-Fi transports. NFC is not a transfer option.

Use TrustDialer on both phones, Android 9 or newer, with Bluetooth enabled and both transfer screens open nearby. Compatible Google Play and website Full editions can transfer in both directions. Bluetooth-only transfer does not require Google services. Optional fast connections use Google Nearby Connections when available; that SDK chooses the available Bluetooth or Wi-Fi transport, potentially including Wi-Fi Direct. A fast connection is not proof that a particular Wi-Fi transport was used.

No internet, Wi-Fi router, cable or TrustDialer cloud account is needed for the payload. Selected data goes directly between the phones, encrypted end to end with a one-time key and checked for tampering; it does not pass through TrustDialer servers. This is a one-time transfer, not continuous sync or remote management. NFC is not supported.

Android 12 and newer ask for Nearby devices. Android 9–11 ask for Location because Android requires it for Bluetooth discovery; TrustDialer does not read or store location. QR scanning runs inside Google Play services and returns only the scanned text; TrustDialer requests no camera permission. Without Play services, use the phone list and matching codes. Permissions are requested when needed.

Local payload transfer does not mean every SDK is telemetry-free. Optional Google Nearby Connections and the QR scanner may send Google SDK usage, performance, device or connection diagnostics as described in the Privacy Policy. Bluetooth-only transfer avoids the optional Nearby SDK path.

This guidance describes TrustDialer. It does not promise the same transfer screen in TrustDialerSms (TrustSMS), and it does not transfer SMS or recent calls.

Can I share settings and caregiver setup between phones?

Dialer

Yes. Select setup sections as well as contacts and lists; setup requires TrustDialer Plus on the receiving phone.

Phone to phone can carry Grandma mode, Kid mode, launcher apps, appearance, emergency layer, caregiver alerts and spam lookup sites. Grandma starter selects Grandma tiles and their contacts, emergency contacts, whitelist, Grandma mode and emergency layer. Kid starter selects Kid tiles and their contacts, whitelist and Kid mode. Adjust either preset before sending.

Contacts, blocked numbers, whitelist entries and favorites are free sections. Setup sections need TrustDialer Plus on the receiving phone, as with setup packs. Without Plus, free sections can be restored but setup sections are skipped; the incoming-transfer screen warns before acceptance. Plus comes from the Play subscription or the signed Full website license. Sending whitelist entries does not grant Plus whitelist enforcement.

Grandma and Kid tiles are added by default, while other protected-mode controls come from the sender. Replace is available for tiles and removes existing tiles not received. Grandma and Kid administrator passwords are never sent; set them again on the receiver. Dual-SIM line choices, Android default dialer/SMS/home-app roles and the light/dark theme are not transferred. Grant Android roles separately. Contact groups, SMS and recent calls are never sent.

Will a phone-to-phone transfer replace existing contacts or settings?

Dialer

Lists are merged, but some setup is replaced. Review the restore preview, especially whitelist protection and protected modes.

Contacts are matched and updated rather than blindly duplicated. Blocked numbers and whitelist entries are added while existing entries remain. Favorites are added while occupied speed-dial digits and the receiver’s ringtones are kept. Unselected sections are not offered or applied.

The sender’s whitelist settings are applied, and an existing whitelist is not switched off. If the sender’s whitelist is enabled, receiving it enables the whitelist too and can reject callers outside the list when enforcement is available. Review schedules, unknown-caller handling and caregiver alerts before restoring. Grandma and Kid tiles are added by default; Replace removes existing tiles not received. Other protected-mode controls come from the sender, so not every setting is merged.

The preview lets you untick sections and choose individual received contacts, blocked numbers and whitelist entries. Add to this phone is the default for whitelist, favorites and Grandma/Kid tiles; Replace makes those lists exactly the received selection and warns about removals. Contacts and blocked numbers are always added, not replaced. The counts and Simulate follow your choices before Restore. The contact target applies to newly created contacts; existing matches remain in their account. Choose Device for phone-only new contacts, but check Google Contacts device-contact backup/sync: it can later move them into a Google account. TrustDialer does not remove existing cloud copies.

Why can’t the other phone be found or finish the transfer?

Dialer

Check visibility, permissions, matching codes, versions and selection size. Retry Bluetooth-only if fast connections fail, or use an encrypted selection file.

If no phones are found, keep the receiver on Receive from another phone. Allow visibility or tap Make visible when the five-minute window expires, then Search again on the sender. Pick only the Bluetooth name displayed on the receiver, not a car, accessory or unfamiliar device.

Keep both phones nearby with their transfer screens open. Each phone has two minutes to confirm the code and accept; afterward, 30 seconds of silence stops the session. If Bluetooth turns off, the connection drops or the session times out, nothing is restored. Start again on both phones. Never approve different codes.

For incompatible versions, update TrustDialer on both phones. Selections larger than 64 MB are refused before sending; use smaller batches, especially for contacts with photos. If the optional fast connection fails, retry Bluetooth-only. If QR scanning is unavailable, choose the receiver by its displayed name and compare the codes. An encrypted selection file is another transfer path. If setup sections are skipped, activate Plus on the receiving phone and resend the setup. Receive still requires a separate Restore confirmation. Transfer diagnostics include local session history, not the selected contact contents; review reports before sharing.

How do I create a backup before changing phones?

Both

Create an encrypted full backup, choose what to include, and save it to a location you can reach from the next phone.

Open Backup, choose the sections you want to keep, create a password, and choose a local or shared save location you can reach later.

Full backups are the path for supported phone data such as contacts, recents, blocked numbers, and SMS where the installed build and Android allow it. Keep the password safe. An encrypted backup cannot be opened without it.

Can I use a setup pack without Plus?

Dialer

No. Full backups stay available, but setup-pack export and restore are TrustDialer Plus features.

No. A setup pack is the Plus transfer tool for caregiver-managed setup. It can move protected modes, launcher apps, whitelist setup, favorites, contact groups, spam lookup settings, appearance, and safety data without importing contacts, recents, blocked numbers, or SMS.

Use a full backup when you need supported phone data. Use a setup pack only when Plus is active and you want to move the managed TrustDialer setup without a full phone-data restore.

Can I see what a restore will change first?

Both

Yes. Preview and simulate a restore before it writes data, then choose only the sections you want to restore.

Choose a backup, open its preview, and run a simulation before making changes. TrustDialer explains which sections are available and whether each will be added, replaced, merged, or skipped.

You can select only the sections you need instead of restoring everything.

Can I move synced contacts back to my phone with Plus?

Dialer

Yes. Moving synced contacts into a device-local destination is a TrustDialer Plus feature when Android exposes that destination.

TrustDialer Plus can move genuinely new contacts into a writable device-contact store when Android exposes one, while existing matches remain where they already belong. Create an encrypted backup, then use preview and simulation before restoring.

This migration feature is not available in Free. Free can still create encrypted backups, but it does not offer the device-local contact migration path.

TrustDialer does not remotely remove contacts from Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, or another provider. Those cloud copies remain under the family’s control. The available contact destinations depend on what Android exposes on the phone.

Can I back up my text messages?

Sms

Text-message backup and restore are available only where the full build and Android role rules allow them.

In TrustDialer Full, Android may require TrustDialerSms to be the messaging app while it reads or restores messages.

The backup screen explains when the required access is missing before it starts a restore.

Does TrustDialer upload my calls or messages?

Both

TrustDialer is local-first: normal call, contact, and message use stays on the phone unless you choose to export or share something.

TrustDialer is designed to keep normal call, contact, and message activity on the phone. It does not require a cloud account for ordinary use.

Data leaves the phone only when you deliberately use an export, share, backup destination, diagnostic report, or configured caregiver text-message alert.

Does TrustDialerSms Full need a website license?

Sms

No. TrustDialerSms Full includes every Plus feature without ads or a website license; Google Play offers a separate Plus subscription.

TrustDialerSms Full is the ad-free direct-download build. It includes Plus by design, so there is no website license to buy, enter, or verify. The TrustDialer calling app uses a separate website-license system.

The TrustDialerSms Google Play build has a free tier with ads and offers Plus through Google Play. Both builds still need Android’s default-SMS role and permissions for message access.

How do Free, Trial, and Plus work in Google Play and TrustDialer Full?

Both

Free keeps core daily calling usable; Trial temporarily unlocks Plus; Plus unlocks protected family setup, advanced protection, setup packs, self-test, and caregiver alerts.

Free keeps the daily dialer usable: contacts, search, keypad, favorites, speed dial, recents, missed calls, blacklist, spam lookup, local filtered-call review, full backup, diagnostics, and setup checks.

Trial temporarily unlocks the same protected family features as Plus. TrustDialer Plus unlocks Grandma mode, Kid mode, Protected launcher, Caregiver alerts, advanced call protection, setup packs, Self-test wizard, and advanced per-contact behavior such as always-allow and per-contact SIM overrides.

In Google Play, trial eligibility and the yearly Plus subscription are managed by Google Play. In TrustDialer Full, Trial and Plus are signed website licenses; the €39 Plus website license works locally in the direct-download app. Full names the app, while Plus names the protected feature set.
